About

Judy Cheng,
Founder of Move to Learn Therapy

We all have one. How we got to where we are today and how we develop and use our skills.

Moving from Hong Kong to Canada in 1990,
I’ve always been on the move and love learning new things to challenge myself. Then, in 1996 my life as I knew it came to a sudden halt.  What started out as my initial training for a ‘century’ bike ride from Toronto to Niagara Falls turned into an accident, which resulted in a broken pelvis. I would only come to realize, much later, that here was an opportunity for a far greater calling.  It didn’t feel like it at the time.

Challenged by my desire to return to my regular ballet classes, I realized that, even with my 20+ years of experience practicing as a physiotherapist, I needed more help. So with the goal of recovering more than just everyday mobility, and already knowing a little about the work, I joined the Feldenkrais Method Professional Training. I was a student of the method as soon as I could stand on my own two feet again.

Over the 4 years of studying and training my body began to shift and transform itself. I quickly returned to ballet, and felt I was more flexible, expressive and agile than ever before! As I adapted and introduced my newly acquired skills into my physiotherapy practice, my clients started to have better, quicker and long-lasting results. My work became more fulfilling.

In 2007, my passion for working with children grew. Through one of my clients I came to know and study with Anat Baniel who, at the time, had more than 30 years of experience helping children with special needs.

Studying with Anat Baniel was both inspiring and truly transformational in itself. The striking evidence of progress in every child Anat touches, with improvements in their abilities to move by the end of each lesson, amazed me. I’d never seen this caliber of improvement with the conventional physiotherapy I was practicing at the time.

So now, working with special needs children and supporting their parents to become their child’s best – and most effective – therapist, these are the type of questions I’m asked over and over again. Maybe you’ve asked them yourself?

  • Will my child be able to walk?
  • What can I do to help my daughter progress in her development?
  • When will my son be able to sit on his own?
  • How can I get my daughter to use her hand?
  • How can I get my son to calm down and pay attention

Then there are questions relating to the actual therapy:

  • My son has been working with physiotherapists since he was an infant and yet his progress has been very slow. How can I support him and further his development?
  • My daughter is not making many improvements with the therapies she’s receiving? What can I do?
  • My son is receiving PT and OT at home every 2 to 3 weeks through CCAC (Community Care Access Centre). It just seems like too little for me. Are there additional therapies that could help my child develop?

As a parent myself I truly understand. You’ll do, just as I would, anything and everything it takes to help your child move forward in their development, be it cognitive, emotional, vision, hearing, speech, gross motor and fine motor skills.

My unique blend of expertise might just be the answer to your questions if you’re seeking to explore new and more effective therapies for your child.

The methodology used in the Feldenkrais Method® and Anat Baniel Method for Children are innovative and operate from an understanding very different from traditional therapies.

With my background training and experience in physiotherapy, I’ve integrated these alternative methods into my skill set so that as well as supporting your child’s development myself, I’m also able to help you understand and show you exactly how you can best support your child to move forward in their development.

I look forward to creating new possibilities in movement – and in life – with all my clients’ children – one child at a time.

1154052 Like you, I need to make time for myself. I love to cook nutritious meals for my family and, of course, this takes planning. Zoe, our daughter and I enjoy getting together and immersing ourselves in arts and crafts. I drew this beautiful heart, connecting with the power and joy of colours. It was so much fun being creative and child-like again!

One of the things I’ve committed to is allowing my ‘Inner Ballerina’ to step out each week. Having recovered from a broken pelvis, which at the time meant that I couldn’t dance anymore, makes it all the more paramount.

And, like your child, the importance of regular practice to keep our bodies supple and strong is so key. Here I am, in my tutu and pointe shoes, releasing my inner ballerina for both fun and my own well-being.

I hope you take the time when you can, to do things for yourself which nurture you and make you happy. It’s not always easy to commit to that for yourself when there are so many demands on your time and attention.

But, if you can, it is so worth it.
